AGA Quality Measures for Preventative Strategies in patients with IBD

Release Date: November 5, 2014
Expiration Date: November 5, 2015

Target Audience: The intended audience for this activity is gastroenterologists and other healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients with IBD.

Statement of Need/Program Overview/Goal:
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) is one of the most prevalent gastrointestinal diseases in the United States. Despite effective therapies that aid patients to achieve disease control and even remission, many individuals continue to receive care that is not recommended by practice guidelines. Agents used in the management of IBD can have serious overall consequences, such as increased infection risk and deleterious effects on bone health. In this activity, participants will learn to mitigate iatrogenic injury in IBD patients by implementing quality improvement measures aimed at administering appropriate vaccinations and the appropriate use of corticosteroid-sparing therapies. In addition, smoking cessation techniques and relevant counseling strategies will also be discussed.

Educational (Learning) Objectives:
  • Improve preventive care in the management of inflammatory bowel disease by optimizing corticosteroid sparing therapy.
  • Immunize patients with inflammatory bowel disease against influenza and pneumococcal disease to reduce complications.
  • Screen patients with inflammatory bowel disease for tobacco use and implement effective cessation interventions.
